SAINT MARY PARISH: PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES
Thursday, 10 March, 2011
Meeting opened with “The Prayer for Peace”
1. Roll call: Present were: Father Cook, Patricia Biebel , Special Guest, Angie Cina, Dan Kotek, Dave Matheys, Mike McMahon, Dennis Olson, Terri Pedace, Marlene Norman, Julie Steiner, Don Tully. Excused absences: Kendra Arch, Karen Diehl, Jim Guillen.
2. Minutes from 13 January meeting approved.
3. Getting the spirit of the parish: “What are they saying out there?” Father Cook read a thank you card from a representative of the Good Shepherd Food Pantry; Pat Biebel heard someone say that they liked “ the window” ; a comment w as made about the beautiful Christmas celebration, how it felt peaceful and prayerful and about how Father Cooks Homily was liked, “ so down to earth”; our parish feels “ warm----people greet each other” ; “friendly”.
4. Reports: Parish Clubs: Angie Cina reports that the Travel Club doesn’t have anything planned for now; the Bible Club is getting started; the Book club is reading “The Help” for this month; Zarephath Club has a lunch outing planned for this month.
Religious Education Program: Second grade 1st Confession was 26 February; a potluck followed; Confirmation was 6 March with Father Cook presiding for Bishop Callahan, who was in South America. All went very well; REP now has Internet and E-mail. New E-mail address is: stmaryrep@mwt.net ; First Communion is Sunday, April 10 @ 12:30; Last class will be Wednesday evening April 27; Sunday May 1st will be May Crowning.
Parish Nurse Program: Terri Pedace reports that she has added a new family to her monthly visit list; that she has experienced a second client death; BP screening was recently completed for the 1st quarter. There were about 15 participants; other activity summaries were also presented. Terri requested that the parish cover her fee for the Annual Parish Nurse Renewal Day. Father Cook agreed to do so.
PCCW REPORT: Pat Biebel reports that the “Circles” are doing well. There were several funerals in February; the “World Day Of Prayer” went well, that it was a “beautiful service”. Next event is the Marion Banquet in month of May. Utility items that were needed in the kitchen have been purchased. The PCCW will be asked to purchase the books that were used during the “World day Of Prayer” Father Cook mentioned that the PCCW would need to serve the Lenten Ecumenical Service that will be held March 30, in our parish. Don Tully mentioned that it would be helpful if the kitchen could have an electric griddle that could be used for certain breakfasts. Father Cook asked that he research cost etc. and bring results to next meeting.
JOSEPH CLUB: Don Tully reports that there were about 75 participants at the Parish dance; that the music was good and the food great. The pew surfacing has been finished and some were found to be in need of repair. The club will assist in the floor refurbishing project. The club will serve a Mother’s Day Breakfast on May 8th after both Masses. The Parish Picnic will be in June.
FINANCE COUNCIL: (As Of 10 March, 2011}; reported by Mike McMahon. Parish savings = $152,641.08; Capital Campaign Fund = $56,314.16; Checking Account=$43,011.42; Total=$259,145.34 Endowment Trust Fund (2/8/11) =$68,856.32
Diocesan Annual Appeal: The target is $38,906; Pledged is $28,860 which is under by $10,046; Cash to date is $25,280 which is under by $13,626. We Belong To Christ Campaign: The target is $ 246,000.; Pledged is $387,671. This is $141,671 over target; Cash to date is $ 319,243.50. This is $ 73,243.50 over target. Father Cook reports at this time that there are at least 10 pews that need new side panels at a cost of approximately $150.00 each with an additional labor cost. He plans to discuss this with the Finance Council. He also states that the Church floors need to have a grinding job done also polishing at a cost of approximately$ 5000.00 or over. The contractor would start on a Sunday and be done by the following week-end. He would like to start in May.
SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE: FORTNEY HOTEL MINISTRY-----Continues to be a success. PAX CHRISTI-----Justice and economics are being studied this year. COMMUNITY GARDEN-----Will meet soon to discuss the garden. More parishioners are encouraged to participate. Pat Biebel has the (2) ½ barrels that were initially requested for the garden.
JOURNEY: Went winter tubing; Bowling ( for which there was a good turnout). Future activities are: Tour of the St. Rose Chapel; Roller skating; Egg hunt the Sunday after Easter ;and a visit to the Bethel Home on a Saturday AM.
PATHWAYS: Have gone skiing; and put on the Italian dinner. They have a Pilgrimage coming up.
5. OLD BUSINESS: a) “The Pie Room”----- Father Cook will contact the Art Committee as previously discussed. A wall hanging done by Anna Mae Krause will hang in this room. There was some discussion as to what to do with adjacent room.
b) E-mail in Religious Ed. Office-----Done.
c) Coke Machine-----Jim Gillen has found a buyer.
d) Coat rack at southwest entrance to Marion Hall-----Will go where Coke machine was.
e)Other-----Don Tully brought up the November Memorial Service that was suggested at a previous meeting. Father Cook said it wouldn’t be developed until this fall.
6. NEW BUSINESS: a) Rectory Improvements----Father Cook states that the desk is done and that he really likes it. He is checking into a new refrigerator. A recliner is still to be chosen.
b) Other-----Paula Cina is retiring in June. Father Cook has put an ad in the Broadcaster. It will also be posted in the Bulletin. A gift is planned in appreciation for her years of service to St. Mary Parish.
The possibility of an “on-line” master calendar was discussed.
